ITV2 turns Halloween into a film marathon, and the best of it comes before Suicide Squad

ITV2 has handed almost its whole Saturday to six films, each one shown in two parts around a news bulletin. The strongest of them is Edward Scissorhands, which starts at 6.55pm and picks up again at 8pm. Tim Burton’s 1990 film is a romance, a fantasy and a drama, with Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder, and it is the one to build the evening around. The headline film at 9pm, Suicide Squad, is the weaker call.

Addams Family Values is the better double bill

Addams Family Values at 5pm and 6.05pm is the film I’d steer a household towards before Edward Scissorhands. It’s a 1993 horror comedy from Barry Sonnenfeld, with Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia, and it belongs on this date more naturally than anything else in the line-up. Put it ahead of Edward Scissorhands and you have a proper two-film run into the evening. Four stars.

Suicide Squad has the prime slot and doesn’t deserve it

Suicide Squad, David Ayer’s 2016 superhero film with Will Smith and Margot Robbie, takes 9pm and the 10.10pm second half. It’s the longest block in the evening’s schedule and it has the most conventional blockbuster appeal. It’s also the film with the most rivals: Split on 5STAR, The Quick and the Dead on 5Action, and Celebrity Gogglebox on E4 all start around the same time. I’d give it two stars as a Halloween choice. It has little to do with the date, and the earlier films suit it better.

The daytime is for families

From 11.10am the channel runs Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, Hotel Transylvania 2 from 1.20pm and Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation from 3.05pm, all aimed at children. Corpse Bride is the 2005 film with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, and it’s the pick of the three. Hotel Transylvania 2 stars Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, and it plays straight into the day’s theme. Scared Shrekless slips in at 12.45pm for 35 minutes, between the two films.

Late

Family Guy closes the evening with two Halloween episodes: Happy Holo-ween at 11.25pm and Halloween on Spooner Street at 11.55pm. They’re half an hour each and a decent way to come down from the film. Earlier, Dress to Impress opens its second series at 6am, and Bob’s Burgers fills two slots after midnight.
