ITV1 on Monday: the soaps do the work

ITV1’s Monday is a soap night with a hole where the argument should be. Emmerdale at 8pm and Coronation Street at 8.30 give the channel a solid hour, and the rest of the evening is there to feed into them or run off them. If you want one thing on ITV1 tonight, it is Coronation Street, and it is a safe choice rather than an exciting one. Three stars.

The double bill is the reason to stay put. Emmerdale has reached 10,775 episodes and Coronation Street 12,040, which is a combined weight of television that no other channel can match for sheer volume. They run back to back, half an hour each, and both turn up on most evenings in our window, so the habit is built in. Emmerdale faces Panorama on BBC One and Only Connect on BBC Two at 8pm, and Coronation Street meets University Challenge on BBC Two and QI on Dave at 8.30. That is a fair fight for ITV1: both of those are programmes people choose, and the soaps are programmes people simply have on. Three stars each, with Coronation Street edging it for sitting in the stronger slot.

The 7.30 slot goes to Cooking With the Stars, a competitive cooking series that has been running since 2021. It is a half hour, and it is up against EastEnders on BBC One and Mastermind on BBC Two, which is not a good place to be. It is the weakest piece of scheduling on the channel tonight, a lead-in doing a lead-in’s job. Two stars.

At nine ITV1 puts up Adultery for an hour. ITV1 isn’t saying what kind of programme it is, so I won’t guess, and it has no episode details to give either. What can be said is that it has the hardest competition of the evening: This City Is Ours on BBC One, Escaping Idi Amin on BBC Two, Murder: Suspect No 1 on Channel 5 and Gogglebox on 4seven all start within ten minutes of it. It also airs on four days in our window, so it is not a one-night event. Three stars on trust: it holds the longest slot on the channel and it has to carry the night.

ITV News at Ten follows at 10pm for half an hour, a bulletin that has been on British television since 1967. The London news takes 15 minutes at 10.30, and Unbelievable Moments: Caught on Camera fills 10.45 for 50 minutes. That last one is the sort of programme that works as background to a late supper. Two stars: it is cheap to schedule and does not pretend otherwise. It is up against Have I Got News for You on BBC One.

The Assembly closes the evening at 11.35pm, a 25-minute programme that has only been on twice in our window. There is no more to say about it than that.

Daytime is the usual parade: Good Morning Britain from 6am, Lorraine, This Morning, Loose Women, then The Chase at 5pm. Lingo is on twice today, at 5.05am and 3pm. All of it is in the table.

The verdict: ITV1 is playing safe on a night when BBC One has the stronger drama at nine, and it knows its viewers will be there at eight regardless.
