ITV1 waits until 10.20pm to give anyone a reason to stay

ITV1’s Sunday is a quiz evening that peaks late. The best thing on the channel is John Wick at 22:20, and nothing before it is likely to beat what BBC One has at 8pm.

The film is a 2014 action thriller directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, with Keanu Reeves, Adrianne Palicki, Alfie Allen and Bridget Moynahan in the cast. It runs 105 minutes, which makes it the longest programme in primetime and a sensible way to fill the end of the night. It starts at 10.20pm, ten minutes before Match of the Day on BBC One, so football viewers will have to pick. Everybody else is better served by the film.

The quiz hour and the hour either side

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? is at 8pm, a quiz show that has run for 35 series and 636 episodes. That is a very large number, and it explains why the slot feels permanent. The difficulty is its opponent: Blue Planet III starts at the same moment on BBC One, with the first episode of a new series. A quiz that long-established can afford to lose some viewers on a night like this. I would not expect it to lose many of its own.

Celebrity Catchphrase leads off primetime at 7pm for an hour. It faces Strictly Come Dancing and the BBC Young Musician 2026 final, so it is the programme most likely to be skipped. Adultery follows at 9pm, and it is hard to make a case for it: ITV1 isn’t saying what it is, it appears three times in the window, and it faces This City Is Ours on BBC One. A night’s best hour is rarely the one nobody can describe.

Daytime and overnight

The World Is Not Enough runs 140 minutes from 13:40, the largest block of the afternoon. Before it, Love Your Weekend with… fills two hours from 9.30am, and Talking Royals takes a half-hour at 12.30pm. Shop on TV occupies two hours at 1am and has turned up on eight days in the window, so it is a fixture, not a choice.

ITV News airs at 22:00 and The Chase at 17:35 for the usual hour. Neither is where the night is decided.
