ITV1’s Friday is two soaps and a film, and the film is the better bet
ITV1 has not tried to match the BBC’s big event with one of its own. It has put Emmerdale and Coronation Street back to back from 8pm and saved Top Gun for 10.45pm, and for most viewers that film is the strongest reason to be here tonight.
Top Gun is the pick. It is the 1986 film directed by Tony Scott, with Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards and Tom Skerritt in the cast, and it runs for 110 minutes. It also aired in the window on 25 October, so this is a second showing. What it offers is a late-night slot where it faces The Graham Norton Show on BBC One and little else of the same weight. I give it three stars: a known quantity, well placed, not a discovery.
The soaps
Emmerdale at 8pm and Coronation Street at 8.30pm are the spine of the evening. Emmerdale stands at 10,775 episodes to date across 55 series, and Coronation Street at 12,040 episodes across 67 series. Those numbers say a lot about how reliably ITV1 fills this part of the night. Emmerdale starts at exactly the moment The Celebrity Traitors does on BBC One, which makes it the harder fight of the two. Anyone loyal to the soap will stay; anyone undecided has an easy reason to leave.
Neither gets more than three stars from me, because each is a half-hour of a long-running programme with nothing in the schedule to say why this Friday is different from the last. That is no complaint. It is how soaps work.
The lead-in and the follow-up
It’ll Be Alright on the Night opens primetime at 7.30pm. It has run to 42 episodes to date, with Denis Norden and Griff Rhys Jones in the cast list, and it comes up twice in the window, today and on 23 October. It faces Have I Got News for You head on. I would not go out of my way for it.
Beat the Chasers follows at 9pm for an hour, a quiz spin-off. It is the least distinctive hour of the schedule, particularly against Raiders of the Lost Past on BBC Two and M3GAN on E4. It earns two stars from me. It does its job as bridge between the soaps and the news.
ITV News at Ten at 10pm and ITV News London at 10.30pm are the usual anchors before the film. After Top Gun ends, the overnight is Shop on TV from 12.35am.
Daytime
The Chase at 5pm and the long run of Good Morning Britain, Lorraine and This Morning are the same fixtures as every weekday. Deal or No Deal appears twice, at 5.05am and 4pm. That is all the table needs to say.
