ITV1 stakes its night on the soaps and a late monster film
ITV1’s Thursday has a clear shape: two soaps back to back, Long Lost Family at nine, and a big-budget film that doesn’t start until a quarter to eleven. The film is the pick for the simple reason that it is the only thing on the channel that is a different kind of programme, but Long Lost Family is the better television.
Long Lost Family is the quality hour
Long Lost Family takes the 9pm hour. It is based on Spoorloos, and 49 episodes have been made to date, a modest total beside the soaps around it. I won’t say anything about tonight’s episode because there is nothing to say without inventing it. As a scheduling decision, though, putting a documentary of this weight after two soaps is sound. It gives the evening a second gear, and it is the best argument for staying with ITV1 through 10pm. I’ve given it four stars.
The soaps do the heavy lifting
Emmerdale is at 8pm and Coronation Street at 8.30pm, half an hour each. Emmerdale stands at 10,775 episodes to date across 55 series. Coronation Street is at 12,040 episodes across 67 series. Those are enormous numbers and they explain why ITV1 can leave the 8pm slot to a soap without worrying. Emmerdale goes up against The Celebrity Traitors on BBC One, which is the night’s toughest head-to-head for ITV1. Both soaps are reliable, and neither is a surprise.
Martin Lewis at 7.15pm
The Martin Lewis Money Show arrives at 7.15pm, ahead of the soaps, for 45 minutes. It is a money programme in the half hour-plus before the soaps start, and the title tells you most of what it does. I’d call it useful and leave it there.
Godzilla vs Kong closes the night
The film begins at 10.45pm and runs 110 minutes, which takes it past midnight. It is the 2021 film directed by Adam Wingard, with Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown and Rebecca Hall in the cast. It is a monster film for people who want to switch their brains off, and a quarter to eleven is the right time for that. It also aired on 23 October. It is going against Question Time on BBC One, so there is a straight choice between argument and spectacle.
That makes this a night with one proper decision. If you want the soaps, ITV1 is the home. If you want something with a bit more heft, stay for Long Lost Family. If you are still up at a quarter to eleven, the monsters are waiting.
