ITV1 hangs its Saturday on one big booking: The Voice UK at half past eight

ITV1 has put its weight behind one programme tonight. The Voice UK starts at 8.30pm and runs 110 minutes, the longest primetime slot on the channel, and everything else in the evening is arranged to feed into it or recover from it. The show is a talent contest with will.i.am in its cast. Three stars: reliable rather than a must-see, and the pick because nothing else around it is bigger.

The timing is the interesting part. BBC One’s Strictly Halloween Special ends at 8.30pm, so The Voice is starting just as the main rival’s biggest show finishes. ITV is not competing with Strictly head to head so much as catching the audience as it leaves. Wisdom of the Crowd is BBC One’s 45-minute answer. If you have been following the dance show you do not have to choose until half past eight, which is the point of the scheduling.

Before it, at 7.30pm, comes Win Win with Postcode Lottery for an hour. The title carries the “New:” label in the schedule, so ITV is presenting it as something fresh, but the hour is the weaker part of the night. Two stars. It faces live Serie A on BBC Two and, a few minutes later, a run of comedy on other channels, and a lottery show has to work hard against live football. The Chase, the 6.30pm fixture, is the stronger lead-in for the family evening.

After The Voice there is a short gap: ITV News at 10.20pm for 15 minutes, then Romesh Ranganathan’s Parents’ Evening at 10.35pm for an hour. This is the programme that makes a real choice for viewers, because BBC One’s Match of the Day starts at 10.25pm. A comedy hour at 10.35pm is a deliberate alternative to football highlights rather than a plain follow-on. Three stars, mostly for the clarity of the pitch. English Football League Highlights closes the evening at 11.35pm for 85 minutes, so ITV is not ignoring football altogether.

Earlier in the day the schedule is built from cookery, racing and a film. James Martin’s Saturday Morning runs 150 minutes from 9.30am, and Clodagh: Cooking at Home follows at noon. ITV Racing: Live from Wetherby takes up 195 minutes from 12.45pm, a long afternoon that will suit racing followers and bore everyone else. Grease starts at 4pm and runs 125 minutes, making it the natural family film of the day. Three stars.

Overnight, the channel hands over to Shop on TV for 145 minutes from 12.35am, then Lingo and Deal or No Deal.
