BBC Two on Monday: three quizzes in a row, then a documentary hour

BBC Two’s Monday evening is built on a simple idea: put brainy quizzes on from half past seven and don’t apologise. Mastermind at 7.30, Only Connect at 8, University Challenge at 8.30. Ninety minutes, three formats, no filler between them. The best of the three is Only Connect, and the pick of the night, with Frenemies taking on Merseyside Eyes. Four stars.

The case for it is the clash list. At 8pm BBC One has Panorama, Channel 5 has Traffic Cops: Elite Squad One, and 5star has Casualty 24/7: Every Second Counts. Only Connect is the one thing in that slot that rewards you for paying attention rather than simply leaving it on. It turns up on six of the ten days in our window, so Monday is one of its regular nights.

Mastermind opens the block at 7.30 and is the gentlest of the three. It is episode 15 of series 24, half an hour, with EastEnders on BBC One and Cooking With the Stars on ITV1 across the same minutes. It has the weakest of the three slots, being a lead-in rather than a destination, but it does its job. Three stars. University Challenge at 8.30 is episode 17, and it has Coronation Street on ITV1 and QI on Dave as company. Three stars as well: a format that has barely changed and doesn’t need to.

At nine the mood shifts. Escaping Idi Amin is a documentary, a full hour and the longest programme on the channel in primetime. It is episode 2, so the series is under way, and it is a serious counterweight to the quiz run before it. It faces This City Is Ours on BBC One, Gogglebox on 4seven and Made in Chelsea on E4, so BBC Two is not shy about asking for a different kind of viewer at that hour. Three stars. I can’t tell you more about the film than its title and length, and I’d rather say that than pretend.

Live at the Apollo follows at 10pm, episode 7, half an hour of stand-up that comes up against BBC News at Ten on BBC One. For anyone who wants to skip the headlines, it is the obvious alternative. Three stars. Newsnight arrives at 10.30 for 28 minutes, and a two-minute weather forecast closes the evening at 10.58.

Highland Cops is the late one. It starts a new series at 11pm, with an hour on a crime documentary called A Murder and a Manhunt in Inverness. Three stars: a late-night documentary slot that suits a Monday.

Earlier in the day there are two other starts worth knowing about. Blue Planet III begins at 7.20am with Tropical Seas, and Impossible returns for a second series at 1pm. Both are in the table below. Neither changes the verdict, which is that BBC Two’s night is a quiz night, and a good one.
