BBC Two saves its best for 10pm, and it is a horror film

BBC Two spends the early part of Friday evening on Newsnight, Landward and Gardeners’ World, then turns sharply at 10pm. Carrie, the 1976 horror with Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, William Katt, Amy Irving, John Travolta and Nancy Allen, runs for 95 minutes and is the reason to stay on the channel after the first hours. It is an older film, and it arrives at the point where BBC One has just gone to the news. That is a smart bit of counter-scheduling.

I would call it the pick without much hesitation. A cast list like that, a running time that fits a late slot and a placement at the start of the post-news hour make it the most self-contained piece of viewing on BBC Two all night. It is up against BBC News at Ten, A&E After Dark on 5Star and What on Earth? on Blaze, none of which is making a serious bid for horror fans.

Before the film

Gardeners’ World at 8pm is a full hour, and it is the programme that has to hold up against The Celebrity Traitors. It will not win that fight on numbers, and it does not need to. This is an alternative for anyone who does not want reality television, and it has aired six times in the window. A steady, unfussy hour in a slot where BBC One has gone all out.

At 9pm, Raiders of the Lost Past with Janina Ramirez takes an hour for history and documentary. Its subject line promises Tutankhamun’s secrets. It faces M3GAN on E4 and Harrods: The Rise & Fall of a British Institution on Channel 5, so it is the thoughtful option of a crowded hour. I rate it a solid three.

Landward at 7.30pm is the agriculture and environment series, with Nick Nairn in the cast. It is a modest opening to the evening, up against Have I Got News for You, and a quiet one by design.

The late hour

The Ones Below, a 2015 thriller directed by David Farr, follows at 11.35pm for 80 minutes. Clémence Poésy leads the cast list, and the film is a decent follow-up to Carrie, since BBC Two is clearly building a small thriller block into the end of its night. If you are still up, it is worth staying.

Overnight, This City Is Ours opens its second series at 12.55am, with Sean Bean, James Nelson-Joyce, Hannah Onslow, Jack McMullen and Julie Graham in the cast. The first series ran to eight episodes. It is a late arrival for a drama that surely deserved earlier billing, so it is one to record rather than stay up for.

Earlier in the day

Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing begins a new series at 8am, which is an odd hour for it and a good one for a record button. House of Games turns up twice, at 7.30am and 6pm, and that is a fixture of the week. The rest is in the table.
