BBC Two spends its Sunday on music, ending in a film about a musician

BBC Two’s evening is a music night from start to finish, and it has the shape to prove it: a two-hour BBC Young Musician 2026 final at 7pm, Later … with Jools Holland at 10pm, and Walk the Line at 22:45 to close. If you want one reason to stay in, it is the final. If you want a second, it is the film.

The final is the long one. Two hours from 7pm is a serious commitment on a Sunday. It runs against Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One, a straight choice between a ballroom results show and a music competition. For anyone who cares about live performance, it is the more interesting of the two.

Half-hours in the middle

Between the final and Jools Holland comes a pair of thirty-minute programmes. Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing is at 9pm with its Breckland Lakes, Norfolk episode, subtitled Bream, and A Course Called Ireland follows at 9.30pm with The High Notes, the second in its series. Gone Fishing has turned up on five days in the window, so it is a familiar presence rather than an event, and it runs against This City Is Ours on BBC One, which is the harder opponent. A Course Called Ireland is the quiet one, a half-hour with nothing to compete with directly. Both are fine and neither is urgent.

Later, then the film

Later … with Jools Holland, Episode 4, follows at 10pm for 45 minutes. It is the programme BBC Two does best on a Sunday, and it gives the closing film its lead-in.

Walk the Line is the anchor at 22:45, 130 minutes, with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. It is a 2005 film directed by James Mangold, based on Man in Black: His Own Story in His Own Words. The only other channel with anything starting near it is Dave, with Mock the Week, so there is almost no competition for the slot. It is long for a Sunday night; plan for a gone-midnight finish.

Overnight

The best late find is No Bears, a 2022 drama directed by Jafar Panahi, on at 00:45 for 105 minutes. It is not a film for the hours before work, but it is worth setting a recording for. Earlier in the day, at 12:35, I Was Monty’s Double is a 1959 film listed for 100 minutes, with John Mills in the cast. Charlton Athletic v Chelsea in the WSL is live at 2.15pm.
