BBC Two opens four series in one evening, and the best is the shortest

BBC Two has used Wednesday to start things. Between 7pm and 11.30pm four programmes are marked as the first episode of a series, and the one to catch is The Future with Hannah Fry at 7.30. It is the pick.

The Future with Hannah Fry begins its second series with an episode called Super Intelligence. It runs for only 25 minutes, which suits it. EastEnders is on BBC One at the same time, so a short science slot has to earn its viewers quickly, and a tight half hour is the right size for that. Four stars.

The hour before belongs to Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, at 7pm with the first episode of series nine. This one is set on the River Ribble in Lancashire, and the subtitle says barbel. It is half an hour of unhurried television against The One Show, and it earns four stars on reliability alone.

At 7.55 comes a five-minute oddity, The Secret Genius of Modern Life, opening with an episode on the bank card. Five minutes is a small commitment, and it leads straight into The Repair Shop at 8pm: episode 25 of series 14, an hour with Jay Blades and Will Kirk. It sits opposite Celebrity Race Across the World on BBC One, and it is the obvious refuge for anyone who does not want a competition. Four stars, and the safest hour of the night.

Nine o’clock is more serious. Spotlight begins a report called Murder in Belfast: Sisters Seeking Justice, billed as Part 1. It is the one hour on the channel with real weight, and it goes up against Who Do You Think You Are? on BBC One, so the choice depends on mood. Three stars, because a Part 1 can only promise.

Ellie & Natasia comes back at 10pm with the second episode of its second series, a half-hour comedy. Newsnight follows at 22:30 for 28 minutes, then BBC Weather at 22:58, and Unspun World with John Simpson at 11pm.

The last opener is the one most people will miss. Get Out: 90 Days to Escape Amin starts at 23:30 and runs for an hour. It is a documentary, and it starts late enough that catch-up is the realistic way to see it. Three stars on the strength of the title alone.

Earlier, Politics Live is on at 11.15 and again at 12.30 as a three-hour Budget 2026 edition. For anyone following the Budget, that is the afternoon’s main event on the channel.
