BBC Two has the football, and the football has the night
Manchester City against Paris Saint-Germain in the Women’s Champions League is live from 7.30pm, and BBC Two has given it 150 minutes. That is a generous block, enough for build-up, the match and some afterwards, and it takes over the entire core of primetime. It also goes straight against EastEnders on BBC One, which makes this the night’s one proper split decision.
If you want the match, tune in at 7.30pm and stay put. If you don’t, there is not much else on BBC Two to fall back on until 10pm.
The 7pm documentary sets a serious tone
Before kick-off, Breast Cancer Scandal: Exposing the Harm takes the 7pm half hour, against The One Show on BBC One and a long list of factual programmes elsewhere. It is a heavy subject for an early-evening slot, and it sits right before the live football. I’d treat it as a considered piece of scheduling and give it three stars on that basis.
Live at the Apollo and Newsnight wind down the night
After the match, Live at the Apollo arrives at 10pm for 30 minutes, listed as episode 2 of series 19. The stand-up showcase is the lighter option against the news on BBC One and ITV1, and a sensible place to land once the football is over. Newsnight follows at 10.30pm for 28 minutes, then the weather at 10.58pm.
Uncanny rounds things off at 11pm with an hour on a paranormal theme, the episode called Emily’s Room. It is the sort of late slot that suits viewers who want something eerie before bed.
Earlier in the day
The afternoon is quiet, with Great British Railway Journeys appearing twice today and House of Games also on twice. The one fresh start is Secrets of the Aquarium, which begins a series at 3.30pm with an hour-long first episode. If you are home in the afternoon it is worth a look. Antiques Roadshow follows at 4.30pm, from Abergavenny, and Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two comes on at 6.30pm for anyone keeping up with the competition.
BBC Two tonight is really one big match with a few supporting acts. For football fans it is a good night. For everyone else it is a quiet one.
