Quest saves its best for 9pm and then plays it twice

The Repair Shop is the reason to stay on Quest tonight, and the channel knows it: it gets both the 9pm and 10pm slots. Jay Blades and Will Kirk are the names attached to it, and it is billed as a documentary and reality series that began on the BBC. Two hours of it is a generous Friday finish, and it is the strongest thing on the channel by some distance. Four stars, and the pick.

The 9pm start is the awkward bit. Against it sit 24 Hours in A&E on 4seven, M3GAN on E4 and Harrods on Channel 5, so it is not an easy night to be a Quest viewer with a remote in hand. By 10pm the field has thinned: BBC News at Ten, Carrie on BBC Two and A&E After Dark. That makes the second helping the easier slot to catch.

The lead-in

Antiques Road Trip opens primetime at 7pm for an hour. It started on BBC Two and has been on Quest for every day of the last ten, which makes it the most dependable thing on the schedule and, by the same token, the least surprising. It faces The One Show and Newsnight, so it is easy to leave on in the background. Three stars.

At 8pm it is The Yorkshire Auction House, which also had a 6pm showing and a Celebrity Yorkshire Auction House at 5pm. That is three hours of one format before The Repair Shop begins, and the 8pm slot is the strongest of them because it sits closest to the main event. The Celebrity Traitors and Gardeners’ World are on elsewhere, so competition for the audience is fierce. Three stars.

Everything else

The rest of the day is the usual Quest conveyor belt. Salvage Hunters turns up through the early hours and the morning, Aussie Gold Hunters and Outback Opal Hunters fill the late morning and midday, and Shed And Buried and Find It, Fix It, Flog It sit in the afternoon. How Do They Do It? is on twice, at 11pm and 11.30pm, as well as shortly after midnight, which makes it a very late bedtime option.
