Burn Notice does the heavy lifting before the Seagal

Great Action’s best two hours come early. Burn Notice runs back to back at 7pm and 8pm, a spy drama from USA Network that ran to seven series and 111 episodes, with Jeffrey Donovan, Gabrielle Anwar and Bruce Campbell in the cast. It is solid, undemanding Wednesday-night television, and it is the safer bet than anything after it.

Worth knowing: the two episodes at 7pm and 8pm are the same two the channel shows at 2pm and 3pm. Catch the afternoon pair and you have already seen the evening.

The 9pm slot belongs to Pistol Whipped, a 2008 action film directed by Roel Reiné, with Steven Seagal and Lance Henriksen. It is cut into two parts, 56 minutes at 9pm and 74 minutes at 10:01pm, with a five-minute history filler wedged between them at 9:56pm. A film that stops for an interval it did not ask for is not at its best, and this is a modest piece of work to begin with. Two stars, for Seagal completists only.

The competition is stiff at 9pm: Law & Order: Organized Crime on 5USA and Who Do You Think You Are? on BBC One both start then. Stay for Burn Notice, then decide.
