Dave’s Friday is built on a 40-minute panel show
The best thing on Dave tonight is also the shortest. Would I Lie To You? at 8.20pm is 40 minutes, which is exactly the right length for a format that works on quick bluffs and not on stamina. It is a daily fixture on the channel, so you are not catching something rare, but it is the one slot where Dave beats the opposition for pace. The show has run to 13 series and 110 episodes, with Lee Mack among the cast, and that back catalogue is why Dave can put it on any night and fill it. Four stars, and the pick.
It sits against Coronation Street on ITV1 and MAS*H on Great TV, so it is a choice, not a clash, for most people.
Around it
The evening opens at 7pm with Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone…, the longest programme of the night at 80 minutes. Everything about that running time says Dave expects you to settle in. It is up against The One Show and Grand Designs, and it is the easy default if you have no strong view. Three stars, mostly for the length of the commitment it asks.
At 9pm Guy Martin: Proper Jobs gets an hour. The title has been on for nine days in this window, which makes it a regular, and it gives the night a change of direction after the 8.20pm slot. On the other side of the dial it faces M3GAN on E4, 24 Hours in A&E on 4seven and Harrods on Channel 5, so there is plenty of competition for the 9pm hour. Three stars.
Have I Got A Bit More News For You? closes primetime at 10pm for an hour, then 8 Out of 10 Cats at 11pm. Both are long-running regulars on the channel, and neither is going to surprise anyone.
The daytime run
Daytime is Rick Stein’s Mediterranean Escapes four times, at 10am, 11am, 4pm and 5pm, plus the Hairy Bikers at midday and again at 6pm, and Border Force America’s Gatekeepers twice before lunch. That is a lot of repetition by design. If you are home in the day, the Top Gear hour at 2pm and Speed with Guy Martin: F1 Challenge at 3pm are the better draws.
