Dave front-loads its good hour, then coasts on panel shows

Dave’s best hour on Wednesday is the first one. Would I Lie To You? at 7pm, then Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing at 7.40, then Would I Lie To You? again at 8.20. After that the schedule settles into the panel-show routine it has leaned on all week.

Would I Lie To You? is the pick. The series has run to 13 series and 110 episodes, with Lee Mack in the middle of it, and it is on every day in this window, so the channel obviously trusts it to hold an audience. Two slots in one evening is generous. The 7pm one has plenty of rivals, including The One Show on BBC One and Mortimer and Whitehouse on BBC Two, but the 8.20 one has almost nothing against it bar MAS*H on Great TV. If you are only going to watch one, that is the one with a clear run. Four stars.

The surprise is the slot in between. Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing is a BBC Two series, now five series and 32 episodes old, with Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse, and it is a quieter piece of television than anything around it. At 7.40 it meets EastEnders and a Carabao Cup tie on ITV1, which is the sort of evening where a gentle hour has the most to offer. Four stars as well.

QI XL at 9pm is the longest programme on the night, an extended version of the quiz at 60 minutes, and the channel has it on twice today, with another showing at 2.30am. That is the problem with the 9pm slot: it is competing with Who Do You Think You Are? and a lot of crime, and it is a show Dave has been running all fortnight. Three stars. It is fine, it is familiar, and the extra length suits it better than a bigger idea would.

Have I Got A Bit More News For You? closes primetime at 10pm and 8 Out of 10 Cats follows at 11pm. Neither changes the verdict. The 10pm slot faces BBC News at Ten, which is the real competition. Three stars.
