Channel 4 on Monday: a full hour of news, then four hour-long slots

Channel 4 has done something its rivals haven’t. It gives the whole of 7pm to Channel 4 News, a full 60 minutes, while BBC One has The One Show and BBC Two has Global Eye in the same slot, both half an hour. That is the programme to pick tonight, and the one that gives the channel its character. Four stars.

The case is partly the competition. At seven, the choice elsewhere is a magazine show, a news half-hour, NCIS, Motorway Cops and American Pickers. An hour of current affairs is a different offer, and nothing else on the dial matches its length. It is also the longest primetime programme on the channel, and the evening is built around it.

After it, Channel 4 settles into a pattern of one hour-long programme after another, and none of them comes with episode details. Jamie’s 20 Minute Meals takes 8pm, facing Panorama on BBC One and Only Connect on BBC Two, which means it is competing with the two stronger slots on the dial. It is a hard hour to defend and a harder one to win. Three stars: a title that promises speed, in a slot where the viewers have been promised depth by everyone else.

Pierre follows at 9pm for an hour. Channel 4 isn’t saying what it is beyond the name, so I won’t pretend otherwise. What I can tell you is that it meets This City Is Ours on BBC One, Escaping Idi Amin on BBC Two and Gogglebox on 4seven, the heaviest field of the night. If Pierre is going to be the evening’s surprise, it has to earn it against all of that. Three stars on trust.

Trauma: My Broken Brain at 10pm has a more serious title and a gentler rival: BBC News at Ten, Live at the Apollo on BBC Two, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on 5usa. It is an hour long, and it runs after the Pierre slot, so the channel is asking viewers to stay put for three hours straight. Three stars.

The 11pm slot is The Taliban’s War on Women, an hour, which closes primetime on the title alone. With the 10pm programme it makes a late block that is serious in tone and out of step with the sitcoms that fill the morning. Three stars.

Those sitcoms are the other half of Channel 4’s day. Cheers is on twice today, The Simpsons twice, and The King of Queens twice, with Everybody Loves Raymond and Frasier as daily fixtures. F1 Mexican GP Highlights is also on twice, at 12.05am and again at 9.40am, which is a lot of Mexico. Come Dine with Me and Four in a Bed fill the late afternoon, and A Place in the Sun appears at 3pm and again at 6pm.

The verdict: Channel 4’s night is front-loaded. Watch the news at seven, then judge the rest by what you fancy, because the schedule gives you little else to go on.
