Channel 4’s night turns on Taskmaster

Channel 4’s best hour tonight is Taskmaster at 9.05pm, and it comes after a Titanic hour that has the unenviable job of going up against The Celebrity Traitors. If you pick one thing here, pick the comedy. It is a panel game show that has been through nine series and 74 episodes to date, and an hour in that slot is generous.

Titanic at 8pm

Titanic: Building the World’s… opens primetime at 8pm and runs 65 minutes, the longest programme of the evening. Channel 4 hasn’t given the full title, and I’d rather not guess at the rest. It is up against The Celebrity Traitors on BBC One and Emmerdale on ITV1, which is the toughest spot of the night. Something this different from its rivals may find its own audience. I’ve given it three stars, mostly for the choice of slot.

It Gets Worse, twice

Two back-to-back half-hours of It Gets Worse close the primetime schedule, at 5 past 10 and 35 past 10, 30 and 35 minutes long. Channel 4 is giving the programme two consecutive slots in a spot that BBC One fills with the news and Question Time. That is a lot of airtime for a programme I can’t judge from its title alone. It is worth a sample, and the late slot means little is lost if it doesn’t land.

Gogglebox for SU2C

At 11.10pm Gogglebox for SU2C closes the night with an hour. It has aired on two days in the window, today included. It is a late extra and I’d treat it as optional.

The rest of the day

The daytime is mostly sitcom strands. The King of Queens is on three times from 6.30am, Everybody Loves Raymond follows and Frasier takes the morning, as it does every day in this window. At 7pm Channel 4 News runs a full hour, at 6pm A New Life in the Sun and at 5pm Four in a Bed lead in. These are fixtures, so they sit in the table below rather than in this piece.

A quiet night on the whole, with one clear highlight at five past nine.
