Channel 4 builds a Friday that gets livelier as it goes
Channel 4’s evening starts slowly and ends live. The hour at 8pm is George Clarke’s Building Home, the hour at 9pm is Gogglebox, and at 10pm The Last Leg arrives live and runs for 65 minutes, the longest programme of the night. That last slot is the pick, and the one most likely to feel like the present tense.
The Last Leg is worth singling out for the simple reason that it is live. Everything else on Channel 4’s primetime is a recorded show with a known shape. A live programme opposite the news on BBC One and Carrie on BBC Two is a different proposition, and it gives the channel a reason to hold viewers who have drifted over from the earlier hours. It has appeared twice in the window, today and 23 October, so it is a regular Friday item. Four stars, because a live show is the one thing the other channels cannot easily offer at this time.
The middle of the evening
Gogglebox at 9pm takes an hour and goes up against Raiders of the Lost Past on BBC Two and M3GAN on E4. It is a comfortable hour that asks for nothing, and I put it at three stars. Its strength is that it is perfectly placed between the 8pm programme and The Last Leg, so it works as a bridge as much as a destination.
George Clarke’s Building Home opens primetime at 8pm for an hour, facing The Celebrity Traitors on BBC One. That is a hard place to be on a night when the other side has something big. The programme has appeared twice in the window, today and 23 October, and it is one for viewers who want to be away from the reality-TV event. Three stars. Channel 4 News fills the 7pm hour before it, a full 60 minutes against The One Show and Newsnight.
Late and early
At 11.05pm, Greg Davies: Firing Cheeseballs… takes an 80-minute slot. It follows The Last Leg and is a sensible next step for anyone who wants to stay with the channel, although the long running time is a commitment so late on a Friday.
The daytime is built from long, even blocks. The King of Queens runs three in a row from 6.30am, Everybody Loves Raymond three from 7.45am and Frasier four from 9.10am. That is a morning of the same few series without a break. It is a steady shape rather than a surprise, and the table covers it. Later come Countdown at 2.10pm, A Place in the Sun at 3pm and Help! We Bought a Village at 4pm, with Four in a Bed and Come Dine with Me before the news.
Overall, this is a Friday with a clear arc. The first half of primetime is easy company; the last half has a live show and a long finish. If Channel 4 has a good night to offer, it comes after 10pm.
