Channel 4 gives The F Ward two hours back to back and fills the day with sitcoms
Channel 4’s Saturday has one unusual decision in it: The F Ward at 9pm and again at 10pm, two straight hours of the same title under the “New:” label. Programmers do not hand a new show a double slot unless they want it noticed, and that is why it is the pick for tonight. We have no way to judge the show from the schedule alone, so three stars is a vote of confidence in the commissioning, not a verdict on what is on screen.
Around it, the primetime is a run of hour-long slots. Ottoman Empire by Train with… opens the evening at 7pm, the longest programme in the lead-in. Griff Across the Alps follows at 8pm, also marked “New:”. Travel in the first two hours and then The F Ward for two more is a tidy structure, with each hour leading cleanly into the next and no filler between them. The risk is that there is nothing here for anyone who wants a film or drama before the late slot. Three stars each for the two travel hours.
The late film is White House Down at 11pm, which runs 145 minutes. It is the only feature of the evening and it arrives after two hours of The F Ward, which makes it a long night. Two stars: a fair option for anyone still awake, but not a reason to stay up.
The afternoon is where the Halloween idea is. Goosebumps takes 120 minutes from 1.30pm and Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween follows at 3.30pm for 105 minutes, a four-hour run that gives the day a children’s-Halloween shape without any further explanation. Between them, The Dog House fills an hour at 12.30pm. At 5.15pm The Great British Bake Off runs 75 minutes before Channel 4 News at 6.30pm. The Bake Off is the best-judged piece of afternoon scheduling on the channel today: it is already a familiar name, and putting it ahead of the news and the travel hours sets up the evening neatly. Three stars.
The rest is the comfort strand Channel 4 runs on Saturdays. Cheers, Everybody Loves Raymond and Frasier take three half-hour slots each across the morning, from 6.15am to 10.35am. The Simpsons fills seven slots across the day, three in the small hours and four from 10.35am to 12.30pm. Grand Designs turns up twice overnight. If you are up early for the sitcoms, the channel has you covered; if you are looking for something to watch tonight, the answer is The F Ward at 9pm.
