BBC One on Monday: the drama at nine is the reason to stay

BBC One’s Monday has one programme that justifies the licence-fee argument and a lot of dependable furniture around it. The one is This City Is Ours at 9pm, an hour of crime drama with Sean Bean, James Nelson-Joyce, Hannah Onslow, Jack McMullen and Julie Graham in the cast. It is episode 4 of the second series, which means the story is already moving and anyone arriving cold is making their own luck. Four stars, and the pick of the night.

It also has the evening’s strongest slot to itself, in a sense. Over on BBC Two it faces Escaping Idi Amin, and Channel 5 has Murder: Suspect No 1 at the same time. The first is a documentary, a different appetite from scripted drama, so BBC One isn’t fighting for the same viewer as hard as the clash list suggests.

Panorama follows at 8pm with Iran: The People’s Story, a full hour in the slot where the evening is usually anchored. It is the longest primetime programme on the channel tonight, and the hour is given over to a single country. Elsewhere at eight there is Only Connect on BBC Two and Casualty 24/7: Every Second Counts on 5star. Panorama asks for more attention than either, and it is the sort of programme that rewards the people who give it. Three stars: a serious piece of scheduling, and I can’t tell you more about the film than its title and length.

EastEnders at 7.30 is episode 174, on a soap that has reached 7,512 episodes in total. Shona McGarty, Ross Kemp, Patsy Palmer, Maddy Hill and Gillian Taylforth are among the names attached to it. It has Mastermind on BBC Two and Cooking With the Stars on ITV1 to beat, and it will. It turns up most evenings, so it is a fixture you can plan around. Three stars, which is where a soap that is reliable rather than essential belongs.

Late on, the panel-show half of the night begins at 10.40 with Have I Got News for You. Ian Hislop and Paul Merton are the names tied to it, and it follows the news at ten and the ten-minute London bulletin, which gives the whole 10pm to 11pm stretch a very current feel. It faces ITV News London and Unbelievable Moments: Caught on Camera on ITV1 at the same time, so it is hardly a ratings fight. It is episode 5 of series 72 and a dependable half hour. Three stars.

The surprise is at 11.10pm. The Traitors Ireland starts its second series with an hour-long first episode. It is an Irish reality series first made for RTÉ One and based on De Verraders, and BBC One has put it late rather than in primetime, behind the crime drama. Three stars for the opener: it’s the obligation for anyone already hooked, and a lot of people will be.

The rest of the day is the usual BBC One daytime. Breakfast runs for 210 minutes from 6am, and The One Show comes at 7pm. Pointless is at 5.15pm, and BBC News at One and at Six hold their usual places. None of it is changed by what happens in the evening.

The verdict: if you only watch one hour on BBC One tonight, make it nine o’clock. Everything else is routine, which is not an insult for a channel that does routine as well as this one does.
