BBC One’s Saturday is Strictly’s Halloween night, and everything after it has a hard job

Strictly Come Dancing has two hours from 6.30pm for its Halloween Special, and that block is the reason to have BBC One on tonight. It is the only part of the schedule that looks built for the date rather than dropped into it. Everything from 8.30pm onwards is competent, but it is working in the shadow of those two hours.

The handover is the awkward bit. Strictly finishes at 8.30pm, which is exactly when The Voice UK starts on ITV1, so anyone who stays for the whole dance show arrives at the rival’s big Saturday show already in progress. BBC One’s answer is Wisdom of the Crowd, episode 7 of a 2026 series, in a 45-minute slot. It is a sensible bridge, short enough not to outstay its welcome, but a quiz-style show rarely holds a Saturday audience that has just spent two hours with a ballroom floor. Two stars: fine as a way to keep the sofa warm, not a reason to choose the channel.

The better case for staying comes at 9.15pm with Marble Hall Murders, episode 6 of its first series, in a 50-minute slot. A mystery drama is the right tonic after an hour and a half of light entertainment, and the 9.15 start leaves a gap after the quiz that suits a slower build. Three stars, with a note that we have only the slot and the episode number to judge it on, so the argument is about where it sits rather than how good it is.

News comes at 10.05pm, then the weather, then Match of the Day at 10.25pm for 90 minutes. The programme is in its 51st series and has long since stopped needing a pitch. What matters tonight is the scheduling around it: ITV1 puts Romesh Ranganathan’s Parents’ Evening up at 10.35pm, so anyone who wants football highlights and anyone who wants a comedy hour are forced to choose. Match of the Day wins on habit alone. Three stars.

Late on, at 11.55pm, comes The Iron Claw, a 2023 film directed by Sean Durkin with Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickinson in the cast. It is a drama about a sporting family and runs 125 minutes, so it will take you well past 2am. It is a decent late-night booking rather than an event, and the length is the main warning. Three stars.

The daytime is the usual Saturday run. Saturday Kitchen Live opens the morning for 90 minutes, Final Score fills 100 minutes from 3.45pm, and The Celebrity Inner Circle (episode 8) sits at 5.45pm as the lead-in to Strictly. None of that needs an argument. If your Halloween plans involve getting in front of the television at all, the case is 6.30pm for the dance floor, a break, and then the 9.15pm mystery, with football as the late alternative.
