BBC One hands the whole of Friday night to the Traitors finale
Nothing else on BBC One tonight matters as much as 8pm. The Celebrity Traitors reaches its finale in an 80-minute slot, the longest programme in the evening by some distance, and the channel has arranged everything around it. If you only switch on once, make it then.
The scheduling shows how seriously BBC One takes it. The series has appeared four times in the window, including Thursday, so this is not a one-off dropped into a normal Friday. Its rivals at 8pm are Gardeners’ World on BBC Two and a run of factual shows on the digital channels, none of which is trying to compete on the same terms. The finale has the slot to itself, in effect.
What follows is the sensible part. At 9.20pm comes The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked, a 40-minute chat show that keeps the conversation on BBC One until the news. I would rate it below the main event, because it exists only to react to something you have just watched, but it is short and it suits anyone who wants to talk about the result straight away. Anyone who would rather sit with it can skip to 10pm.
The lead-in and the late slot
The 7.30pm half-hour belongs to Have I Got News for You, with Ian Hislop and Paul Merton in the cast. It is a decent warm-up and a good way to bring a panel-show audience into the channel before eight. It also sits against ITV1’s It’ll Be Alright on the Night, the nearest thing to direct competition BBC One faces all evening.
After BBC News at Ten, The Graham Norton Show returns at 10.40pm for 50 minutes. The programme has reached 381 episodes to date, and this is the part of the night where a chat show earns its place: lighter than what came before, easy to dip into. It starts against Top Gun on ITV1, so the choice is between a sofa and a jet fighter.
The 11.30pm slot goes to RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, a 70-minute episode. It sits a long way from the Traitors crowd, and that is probably the point. BBC One has used the late hour for a different viewer.
The quiet rest
Pointless at 5.15pm and the news bulletins frame the early evening. Escape to the Country, Bargain Hunt and Homes Under the Hammer fill the middle of the day. None of that needs attention here; it is all in the table.
The honest summary is that Friday has one big event and a competent supporting cast. BBC One has not tried to make the other hours special. It has put its weight where it matters and let the schedule do the rest.
