BBC One spends 65 minutes on The Celebrity Traitors, and it deserves the room

Thursday on BBC One is built around one long hour, and the sensible plan is to clear the evening for it. The Celebrity Traitors reaches episode 9 at 8pm, runs 65 minutes, and has no real rival on the other channels at that time. ITV has Emmerdale, Channel 4 has a documentary about the Titanic, and neither is trying to win the same viewer.

That length matters. An hour-plus slot lets a format like this breathe, and with a cast that includes Alan Carr, Nick Mohammed, Stephen Fry and Celia Imrie there are plenty of personalities to spread the time across. I’m not going to guess what happens in it. What I can say is that nine episodes in, the show has earned the extra five minutes beyond the hour, and BBC One knows it.

The companion show is the one to skip if you’re short of time

The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked follows at 9.05pm for 25 minutes. It is a chat show about the programme you have just watched, and it has the same episode number, 9. Fans of the main event will enjoy lingering; everyone else can switch off at five past nine without missing a thing. It is worth a look rather than a diary entry, and I’ve rated it accordingly.

Not Going Out closes the comedy gap

At 9.30pm Not Going Out turns up with an episode called Banksy. A half-hour sitcom is a sensible way to come down from a 65-minute reality game, and it is the only scripted comedy on BBC One tonight. The series is led by Lee Mack, with Tim Vine and Sally Bretton among its regular cast. It is a dependable fit for the slot, and a sitcom that knows exactly what it is.

The earlier hours are routine

EastEnders is at 7.30pm, episode 173 of the current run, and it runs head to head with Manchester City against Paris Saint-Germain in the Women’s Champions League on BBC Two. That is a real choice for anyone in a house that splits between soap and football, and BBC One has not made it easy. The One Show at 7pm and the news at six and ten are fixtures rather than decisions.

Late on, Question Time

Question Time starts at 10.40pm, after BBC News at Ten and a ten-minute regional bulletin, and fills an hour. It is the channel’s one debate programme tonight, and Godzilla vs Kong starts on ITV1 at 10.45pm for anyone after noise rather than argument. Newscast follows at 11.40pm for 30 minutes.

If you only watch one thing, make it the 8pm Traitors. If you have a second hour, spend it on Not Going Out and leave the rest of the night to the table below.
