5star puts an entire evening in the hospital, and a new series opens at eight

Casualty 24/7: Every Second Counts begins its seventh series at 8pm, and it is the best reason to tune in. 5star has built a four-hour medical block around it, which is a very specific choice for a Monday: doctors, paramedics, then more doctors.

The run begins at 7pm with GPs: Behind Closed Doors, episode 23 of its sixth series. The Channel 5 programme about general practitioners has seven series to its name, and it airs on 5star as a daily fixture, so this is the entry that sets the tone rather than the one to build a night around. It’s competent and steady, and it’s up against The One Show and a handful of daytime-feeling alternatives. I’d call it a three.

Casualty 24/7 at 8pm is the main event. A series opener has the advantage of novelty, and 5star has given it a prime slot. The competition is stiff, with Panorama on BBC One, Grand Designs on 4seven and NCIS on 5usa, but a medical documentary is distinctive enough to hold its audience. Four stars, and the pick.

At 9pm Ambulance: Code Red comes with a stronger sense of repetition. It is back for the fourth time in the window, at episode 11 of its third series. By then you’ll know whether the format suits you. Opposite it are Gogglebox, Made in Chelsea and the opening of Michael Palin in the Philippines, which is a livelier alternative if you want a change of scene.

A&E After Dark finishes the evening at 10pm. It has aired on 8 days in the window, which makes it close to a fixture, and I’d give it two stars: if you’ve sat through three hours of casualty already, the fourth adds little. Skin A&E then closes the night at 11pm.

Be warned that this is a concentrated diet. It rewards viewers who enjoy medical factual television and gives everybody else very little else to choose from.
