5star puts its Halloween night in the 9pm film, and the schedule gets in its way

The one reason to be on 5star on Saturday 31 October is Split at 9pm. It is the film that does the job on a night like this, and it is the only thing the channel has to offer after a long run of Motorway Cops.

Split is the 2017 release, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, with James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Betty Buckley, Haley Lu Richardson and Jessica Sula in the cast. It is classed as a thriller and horror, and I would give it three stars on the strength of the casting and the director’s record in the genre, not on anything I know about tonight’s showing. The practical point is the scheduling. The film goes out in two parts: the first hour runs 9 to 10pm, then Entertainment News On 5 takes five minutes at 10pm, and the second part, 80 minutes, picks up at 10.05pm. It will not run as one clean block.

Everything before it is Motorway Cops: Catching Britain’s Speeders, and a lot of it. Episodes 9 and 10 of series 5 go out at 5 and 6pm, then series 6 starts at 7pm with Episodes 1 and 2 at seven and eight. That is four hours of one programme in prime time, and it also airs twice today, in the early evening and again at night. It has been in the schedule on all ten days in the window, so it is a fixture, and it is competing against NCIS: Los Angeles on 5usa and A Place in the Sun on 4seven. Not an evening for anyone who wanted variety.

The late slot is the other candidate. Rosemary’s Baby, a 2014 miniseries, begins at 11.25pm. It is a two-part series with Zoe Saldaña, Patrick J. Adams and Jason Isaacs in the cast, and the slot is titled Night 1; Night 2. That is worth a place in the planner if the film leaves you wanting more.

The daytime is cruising with Jane McDonald, Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly and GPs: Behind Closed Doors, with the full run in the table.
