5Star spends Sunday on the emergency services, and 10pm brings the new one
5Star’s evening is four hours of the same sort of programme, and the only fresh face arrives last. 999: Emergency Call Out starts at 10pm with S01E01, a series opener, which makes it the pick of a night otherwise built from familiar strands. It is up against White House Down on 4seven and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on 5USA, so a reality-crime debut has to earn its place. Whether it does is something episode one will settle; as a first-night curiosity it is the sensible choice.
Before that, Police Interceptors fills three consecutive hours, 6pm, 7pm and 8pm, with episodes 5, 6 and 7 of series 22, after an earlier one at 5pm. The programme has run for five series on Channel 5 and 61 episodes, and 5Star treats it as wallpaper, on every day in the window. Four episodes in a row is generous even by that standard. Dip in at 7pm if it appeals; there is no sense in committing to the lot.
The 9pm slot goes to Call the Bailiffs: Time To Pay Up, Episode 5 of series 4. It has already aired twice today, at 11am and noon, as episodes 2 and 3 of series 1, and it turns up on eight days in the space of a fortnight. Against Gogglebox on 4seven and This City Is Ours on BBC One, it is the weakest hour of the evening, and a 2 reflects that.
Late on, A&E After Dark takes 11pm, and before it the day has leaned on Traffic Cops in the afternoon and Cruising with Jane McDonald at breakfast. Overnight, Rosemary’s Baby, a 2014 miniseries with Zoe Saldaña and Jason Isaacs, runs across 135 minutes at 12.30am. It is the oddest entry on the day and a decent reason to stay up late.
