5Star’s night is Max Payne, shown twice, after two hours of hospitals

The one film of the evening is Max Payne, and 5Star shows it twice. The 2008 crime and action picture, directed by John Moore, starts at 9pm and comes round again at 10.05pm, with Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis in the lead roles. That is the pick, but it is a modest one. A neo-noir action film is a night in rather than a night out, and the second showing is the easy way to catch it if you come in late.

The film is preceded by two hours of medical documentary. GPs: Behind Closed Doors is on at 7pm, an episode 20 from its sixth series, a Channel 5 factual strand now at seven series. It has turned up on eleven days in our window, so it is a regular. Casualty 24/7: Every Second Counts follows at 8pm, and that is also on every day. Together they make a solid hour-and-a-half of familiar viewing if hospital programmes are your thing, though neither is a night’s reason to tune in. At 7pm the competition is NCIS and The One Show, and at 8pm Celebrity Race Across the World.

At 9pm the film meets Who Do You Think You Are? on BBC One and the Law & Order spin-off on 5USA, which is the stiffer test for a film this size. Entertainment News On 5 sits between the two screenings for five minutes at 10pm, which is as close to a break as the schedule gives you.

Late on, 999 Critical Condition at 11.05pm is episode 3 of the fourth series, another medical hour. It is the least essential programme of the evening and I would skip it.

Daytime is wall to wall police and traffic shows: Traffic Cops from 11am, Police Interceptors through the afternoon, with Home and Away at 6pm. Call the Bailiffs: Time To Pay Up sits at 5pm and airs on six days in our window.

If Max Payne is not for you, the night is thin. If it is, the 9pm showing is the one to catch.
