5action is a policing and motoring channel, except at nine o’clock
Michael Palin in the Philippines is the odd one out on a channel that normally deals in speeding drivers and traffic stops, and it is the best thing on 5action tonight. It starts a new series at 9pm, and it is a travel programme in a lineup that otherwise has none.
That contrast is the whole story of the evening. Motorway Cops: Catching Britain’s Speeders runs at 7pm, episode 6 of its ninth series, and it has aired on ten days in our window, as well as twice earlier today. Police Interceptors follows at 8pm and opens a new series, its eleventh. It is a Channel 5 documentary strand, and I’d give it three stars for steady, familiar viewing. The Motorway Cops hour I’d rate lower, simply because the title is so heavily repeated.
Palin at 9pm is the programme to prioritise. The competition is lively, with Gogglebox on 4seven, Ambulance: Code Red on 5star, This City Is Ours on BBC One and Made in Chelsea on E4. It’s a crowded hour, but a presenter-led travel series with a series opener behind it is different enough from all of them to justify a gamble.
Highway Thru Hell closes primetime at 10pm with Downhill Slide. It is a Canadian documentary series, six series and 76 episodes to date, and it is back for the second time in the window. It goes up against BBC News at Ten and a handful of crime documentaries, and I’d say it holds its own.
Daytime is given over to westerns. Day of Anger, a 1967 Spaghetti Western directed by Tonino Valerii with Lee Van Cleef and Giuliano Gemma, plays at 12:25 and again at 1:30pm. Shotgun, from 1955 with Sterling Hayden and Yvonne De Carlo, follows at 2:15pm. They are fine afternoon fare if you’re at home, but they are not a reason to rearrange your day.
