5Action’s best hours are in the afternoon, and they are Westerns
The strongest thing on 5Action tonight is not in primetime. It is a pair of Westerns shown back to back before lunch and after it, each one twice. The Proud Rebel, a 1958 Michael Curtiz film with Alan Ladd, Olivia de Havilland and Dean Jagger, starts at 1.45pm and returns at 2.50pm. Before it comes Something Big, a 1971 film directed by Andrew V. McLaglen with Dean Martin and Brian Keith, at 11.25am and 12.30pm. Both are listed twice and both are given a lot of room, 75 minutes for the second Something Big and 70 for the second Proud Rebel.
Of the two, The Proud Rebel gets the higher rating from me, on the strength of its older pedigree and its cast. Something Big is decent daytime company if you like Dean Martin in a Western. The afternoon is the only stretch where the channel is doing something different from the rest of its week.
After that, 5Action goes back to what it knows. Police Interceptors fills 6pm, 7pm and 9pm, a British documentary series on Channel 5 that has run to 61 episodes across five series. Those three slots are episodes 4, 5 and 18, and the last is numbered from a much later series, so the order tells you little. Motorway Cops: Catching Britain’s Speeders takes 8pm against Celebrity Race Across the World and The Repair Shop. It airs twice today and on ten days in our window.
Police: Night Shift 999 follows at 10pm, an episode 10, and it has appeared on only two days of the window, so it is the one thing that isn’t a staple. It has to compete with Social Media Monsters on 4seven and Law & Order on 5USA.
The X-Files closes the night at 11pm with Via Negativa, from series 8. It is a daily strand, but it is the only fiction at the end of a night of police footage, so it deserves a mention.
If you have the choice, watch the films and leave primetime to the regulars.
