A Leone western is the only reason to be here

5action spends its Friday on police and motorway documentaries, then drops a Sergio Leone film into the slot where it counts. For a Few Dollars More, the 1965 western, begins at 21:00 with Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef at the top of the cast, and it is the pick by a distance. Nothing else on the channel tonight is in the same league.

The film is listed in two parts: 60 minutes from 21:00, then a 95-minute second half at 22:05. The gap between them is the five-minute Entertainment News On 5 at 22:00. That is a slightly awkward way to show a film, and it means the evening’s showpiece does not finish until 23:40, but it is still a Leone film on a Friday night. Gian Maria Volonté is in the cast, as are Mario Brega and Luigi Pistilli, and the channel also lists Joseph Egger, Mara Krupp and Rosemary Dexter. Opposite it at 21:00 are M3GAN on E4, Memory on Film4 and Harrods: The Rise & Fall of a British Institution on Channel 5, so it is up against real competition, and I still would not switch.

Western fans also get a second Leone earlier in the day. Once Upon a Time in the West, from 1968, is split across 11:55 and 13:00, with Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale and Charles Bronson in the cast, and the second part runs for two hours. It is a daytime slot, so it is one for anyone off today.

The primetime build-up is much less distinctive. Police Interceptors fills 19:00, and Motorway Cops: Catching Britain’s Speeders follows at 20:00. Police Interceptors is a Channel 5 documentary series with 61 episodes to date, and it airs on the channel every day. Motorway Cops is on twice today, with episode 10 at 17:00 and episode 5 at 20:00, and it has appeared on every one of the ten days in the window. These are fixtures, solid and slightly samey. Motorway Cops has a bit of competition from NCIS and Casualty 24/7, which at 20:00 are both going after the same viewer.

Late on, The X-Files: Salvage, series 8, episode 9, comes on at 23:40, which will suit anyone still up once the film ends.

My advice is to ignore 19:00 and 20:00 and arrive at 21:00 with the film.
