5action turns Saturday into a Western day, with three films from 5.20pm

5action has a proper film evening on Saturday 31 October, and it is a Western run from 5.20pm to 11pm. Dawn at Socorro, Valdez Is Coming and The Quick and the Dead come one after the other, and the last of them is the one I would clear the evening for.

The Quick and the Dead is the 1995 film directed by Sam Raimi. Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobin Bell are in the cast, which is a better line-up than most Saturday-night Westerns manage. It starts at 9pm for an hour, breaks for Entertainment News On 5 at 10pm, and returns at 10.05pm for another hour. Four stars. The news break is the only irritation.

Valdez Is Coming at 7.05pm is the one for Western purists. It is a 1971 film directed by Edwin Sherin, with Burt Lancaster, Susan Clark, Jon Cypher, Frank Silvera and Richard Jordan. Like the later film, it is chopped around a five-minute bulletin, with the first part to 8.05pm and the rest from 8.10pm. Its direct rivals are NCIS: Los Angeles on 5usa and Motorway Cops on 5star, and Edward Scissorhands on ITV2 comes in at the same time, which is the real alternative if you want a film.

Dawn at Socorro opens the run at 5.20pm. It is a 1954 film directed by George Sherman, with Rory Calhoun, Piper Laurie, David Brian and Edgar Buchanan. It is the oldest of the three, and its place as an early-evening film is a sensible use of the slot.

Before all of that, 5action’s day is the usual driving strand: Police Interceptors from 9.25am, Traffic Cops through the afternoon, and Trucking Hell at 9.05. They are daily fixtures here, not a Saturday treat.

After the 10.05pm film, The X-Files is on at 11.05pm with Redrum, from series 8. The overnight run is Murder 360, Ice Road Truckers and more Trucking Hell. The rest is in the table.
