Sky Arts builds a double bill around John Carpenter

The sensible way to spend Saturday night on Sky Arts is to start at 8pm and not move. The Directors: John Carpenter takes the hour, and at 9pm The Fog follows, so you get the filmmaker’s own career laid out and then one of his films straight after. Carpenter directed it, with Adrienne Barbeau and Jamie Lee Curtis among the cast. It is a horror, a ghost story and a mystery in one, and it fills a 105-minute slot that suits the night.

The Life and Deaths of Christopher Lee closes things at 22:45, at 125 minutes the longest thing on the channel. Joe Dante, Peter Jackson, John Landis and Caroline Munro appear, which is a decent line-up of people to explain an actor. It is a long sit after a film, so treat it as optional.

Before that, the 7pm slot is Classic Albums, with Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell the subject. It turns up on six days in the window, so it is a regular rather than a one-off, and a good warm-up if you want music before the horror.

The rest of the day is a loop of Tales of the Unexpected and the Alfred Hitchcock Hour, which is useful background and little else.
