Drama clears two hours for Brokenwood, and the rest is comfort viewing
The Brokenwood Mysteries gets the whole of the 8pm slot on Drama, a full two hours, and that is the only reason to tune in with any intent. Everything else tonight is the channel doing what it does best: familiar faces, familiar pace, nothing that needs your full attention.
Brokenwood is a New Zealand series with ten series and 48 episodes behind it, so there is plenty of room for the channel to keep coming back. It turns up on four days in the current window, which tells you Drama treats it as a staple rather than an event. Two hours is a generous run for a show of this kind, and it gives the evening a proper centre. Opposite it, the BBC has Panorama and Only Connect, and Channel 5 has Traffic Cops. That is a very different choice from a murder mystery, so there is little real competition for anyone who wants to settle in.
The lead-in is Last Of The Summer Wine, which Drama runs three times in a row from 6pm, with the last at 7.20. It is a British sitcom that ran for 31 series and 295 episodes, and the channel clearly sees it as a block rather than a single programme. Three in a row is a lot for one evening. If you only want one, the 6pm start is the cleanest way in.
After Brokenwood, New Tricks takes the 10pm hour and runs for 80 minutes. The police procedural ran for 12 series and 107 episodes, and it is the sort of late slot that works because it asks nothing of you. Waking the Dead follows at 11.20 for those still up.
The rest of the day is soaps and old hospital dramas: Classic Doctors, Classic Holby City, Classic Casualty, Classic EastEnders and Neighbours. They are fixtures, not events, and they sit in the table below.
Verdict: Brokenwood at 8pm is the one worth planning around, and New Tricks is a decent second helping if you are still awake.
