Drama saves its best for last, and it is worth the wait

Drama’s Thursday is a slow climb, and the top of it is New Tricks at 10pm. It gets 80 minutes, the longest slot of the night, and it starts as BBC One heads into the News at Ten. For anyone who wants a long, unhurried police drama before bed, this is the evening’s answer.

New Tricks began on BBC One and ran to 12 series and 107 episodes, which is a deep well to draw from, and it airs on Drama every day. Four stars and the pick, because a long slot after 10pm is rare on this channel and the programme has the weight to fill it.

Before that comes Miss Scarlet at 8pm. It started on Alibi and has run to 6 series and 36 episodes. It is the lighter of the two crime dramas on offer, and it sits opposite The Celebrity Traitors on BBC One, so it suits anyone who would rather skip that one. Three stars.

A Remarkable Place to Die follows at 9pm and is the schedule’s one real curiosity. It is a New Zealand-Australian series, and it has appeared on Drama on just two days in the window, last Thursday and tonight, so it is nowhere near a habit yet. Whether it suits depends on appetite for something unfamiliar. Three stars, with no strong case for or against.

Earlier, Last Of The Summer Wine takes three consecutive slots, at 6pm, 6.40pm and 7.20pm. That is a great deal of one sitcom, though 31 series and 295 episodes make it a deep catalogue. Only the last of the three reaches primetime, up against EastEnders on BBC One. A comfortable lead-in and nothing more.

Late on, Shakespeare And Hathaway – Private Investigators comes round again at 11.20pm, its second showing today after the afternoon one. A fine nightcap if New Tricks has left you wanting more.
