Drama gives its Sunday to one long crime hour
Silent Witness at 9pm is the only reason to plan an evening around Drama tonight, and at 135 minutes it asks for the whole of the back half. It is a series with real weight behind it: 27 series and 248 episodes to date, and a slot that long suits a show with that much history. It runs against Gogglebox on 4seven and This City Is Ours on BBC One, so anyone who wants to settle in for the length of a film has a decent option here.
It also aired on 25 October, so a viewer who caught it last week should check before committing a late Sunday.
Before it comes Sister Boniface Mysteries at 8pm. It is a comedy drama with a crime and mystery bent, and it has run for four series and 38 episodes. It is the lighter half of the evening and a sensible warm-up for the heavier hour that follows, although it has aired three times in the past fortnight, so this is a comfort watch rather than a discovery. It faces Columbo on 5USA, which is a hard thing to beat for anyone who likes their detective stories gentle.
The 7pm slot belongs to Sense and Sensibility, the 2008 serial, and it is the odd part of the day. It is on at half past four, again at ten to six, and then at seven: three slots, with three episodes to date, so the channel is effectively running the whole thing as an afternoon-into-evening marathon. Against Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One it will not draw a crowd, but it is a tidy way to catch up for anyone who missed it. Worth a look if you like a period piece with the afternoon to spare.
Late on, New Tricks at 11.15pm is a fixture, and The Bill fills the morning. Neither is news. Queens of Mystery is on at 3am with signing, which is for the record rather than the sofa.
The verdict: Silent Witness for the main event, Sister Boniface Mysteries as a lighter starter, and keep the Sense and Sensibility marathon for a quiet afternoon.
