Channel 5 saves its new series for the end of a four-hour crime run
Channel 5 spends Monday night on crime from 7pm to midnight, and the one new thing in it arrives last: Twisted Sisters: Madness & Manslaughter starts at 10pm, with its second episode following at 11.05pm. If you are only going to stay up for one hour of Channel 5 tonight, make it that one.
It is a documentary series, listed as crime, and it opens at the point where Channel 5 faces the least resistance. BBC One has the news at ten, BBC Two has Live at the Apollo and ITV2 is on Big Brother: The Group Chat. Anyone who has been watching Channel 5’s crime programmes since seven is already in the right frame of mind. Running a second episode straight afterwards is a confident move, and it gives the series a fair chance of being binged rather than sampled. We can’t say much more about it than that, because it is a first episode and there is nothing to measure it against. Four stars on promise.
The hours before it are a different matter. Police Interceptors at 7pm is the 2nd episode of series 23, which says plenty about how long this formula has been running. Traffic Cops: Elite Squad One follows at 8pm, a programme that has been on this channel on three days in the last fortnight and a bit, so it is a fixture more than an event. At 8pm it goes up against Panorama and Only Connect, both of which are better bets for anyone who wants to be told something.
Murder: Suspect No 1 at 9pm is the best of the middle block, if only because it changes the register. It is the second episode of its second series and it is listed as crime and documentary rather than as a ride-along. Opposite it BBC One has This City Is Ours and BBC Two has Escaping Idi Amin, so this is where the channel is most exposed.
Earlier on, Portugal with Michael Portillo reaches Sintra at 6pm, the sixth episode of the first series. It has been on seven days in the last fortnight and the channel clearly likes it as an early-evening opener. It is a gentle hour and a useful one if the 7pm crime is not for you.
And then there is the afternoon. It is the second of November and Channel 5 is already showing Christmas films: Christmas in Pine Valley (2022) at 1.40pm and Christmas Unfiltered (2022) at 3.25pm. Both are listed as romance or comedy respectively and they run for 105 and 95 minutes. Neither is going to change anyone’s week, but the channel is plainly starting its festive run early.
Elsewhere the day is children’s programmes until 9am, then Jeremy Vine, Storm & Alexis and Matt Allwright through the late morning. All of it is in the table below.
