Three starts in one evening, and Channel 5 has lined them up on purpose
Channel 5 has opened a series at 8pm, 9.05pm and 10.05pm, and the middle one is the best reason to stay. The Madame Blanc Mysteries starts its fifth series at 9.05 with the episode called Fountain, and it is the only drama on the channel all night. Sally Lindsay stars. She also fronts the 10.05 chat show that follows, which means Channel 5 has built a Lindsay double bill without saying so.
The competition at 9pm is mostly factual. Gogglebox is on E4, and BBC One has The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked. A crime drama is a different proposition from either, and the slot is a sensible one: it sits after the 8pm programme and gives the evening a spine. Four stars, and my pick.
The Yorkshire Vet at 8pm
The Yorkshire Vet returns with the first episode of series 24, running 65 minutes, which is generous for the slot. Julian Norton is the name attached to it. The trouble is the clock: 8pm is where BBC One puts The Celebrity Traitors, and NCIS and First Dates are both starting too. This is a programme with a loyal habit behind it and it does not need to chase anyone, but it is up against a lot. Four stars for the show, with the caveat that anyone who follows the BBC game will have to choose.
A quieter 7pm, and a late finish
Tales From the Riverbank: Dart is only the second episode of its run, and a full hour on a single river is a patient piece of scheduling at 7pm, when the other channels are offering The One Show and NCIS. It is an easy lead-in to the vet. Three stars.
A Night in with Sally Lindsay opens at 10.05, and the first episode is titled Suranne Jones. A first episode of a chat show has everything to prove and nothing to lose at this hour, with BBC News at Ten and Live at the Apollo as the main alternatives. Three stars, mostly on goodwill.
999 Killer on the Line follows at 11.05. It has been on twice in the window, and the late slot suits it. It is a programme for people who already know they want it, so two stars from me, which is not a criticism of the audience.
Daytime and overnight
The afternoon film is Murders to Die For, a 2023 thriller at 2.20pm that runs 100 minutes. It is routine afternoon fare and nothing more. Portugal with Michael Portillo turns up at 4.30am and again at 6pm with the Madeira episode; the evening showing is the one to catch. Earlier in the day the schedule is children’s animation from 5.20am until 9am and then Jeremy Vine, Storm & Alexis and Matt Allwright through to the afternoon. A quiet day around a strong block from 8pm.
