Channel 5 turns Friday into a documentary night, and Egypt is the part to keep

Channel 5 has built its Friday evening out of factual programmes, four of them in a row, and the strongest is Egypt with Dan Snow at 8pm. It is only the second episode of the series, which makes it the best point to join one that is still young. It is also the hour where Channel 5 is most exposed: The Celebrity Traitors is on BBC One at the same time, and First Dates is on E4. If you are not drawn to either, this is the clear alternative.

Egypt is the one with real weight behind it. A travel documentary with Snow’s name on it is what the channel does well, and it stands out from the gentler hour before it. The schedule has it down for a second airing on the 23rd as well, so anyone who missed last week has had a chance to catch up.

Harrods: The Rise & Fall of a British Institution follows at 9pm, and it is the more interesting scheduling decision. It goes up against 24 Hours in A&E on 4seven, a Raiders of the Lost Past with Janina Ramirez on BBC Two and M3GAN on E4. A corporate-history documentary has to work harder than those. The title promises a story with a turn in it, and an hour is about right for that. I would sooner watch it than the film alternatives, though it is not a night-defining hour.

Before either, the early part of primetime is gentler. Portugal with Michael Portillo is at 6pm, with the episode taking in Aveiro and Coimbra, and it is one of the few programmes on the page repeated twice in the day. It is also on every weekday this week, which tells you Channel 5 treats it as a fixture of the early evening rather than an event. At 7pm Our Great Yorkshire Life reaches its eighth episode of a fourth series. That is a long run for a regional documentary, and the 7pm slot against The One Show suits it. It is comfortable, undemanding and finished before the real competition starts.

Alan Carr: My Best Bits & More closes the evening at 10pm, and at 85 minutes it is the longest programme of the night. It is the weakest of the headline slots. The title suggests a look back over earlier material rather than something made for tonight, and it has aired before, on the 24th. Placing it in the biggest slot of the night says more about the schedule than about the programme. Opposite it are Carrie on BBC Two and BBC News at Ten, which is not the toughest field, but it is not a reason to stay up either.

Piers Morgan: Uncensored comes at 23:25 for 90 minutes, which is a late hour for those who want it and not much else to say about it.

Earlier in the day there is one film worth marking. Miss Willoughby and the Haunted Bookshop, from 2021, is on at 2:20pm. It is an adventure with crime and mystery in it, directed by Brad Watson, with Kelsey Grammer, Nathalie Cox and Caroline Quentin in the cast. That is a decent line-up for an afternoon, and it makes a reasonable second choice if the evening has not worked out.

The plan is simple. Watch Egypt at 8pm. Decide on Harrods at 9pm depending on what else you have on, and treat Alan Carr as optional.
