5USA’s night is built on NCIS, and Wild Cards is the only change of pace

If you want something other than a police procedural tonight, 5USA offers exactly one thing: Wild Cards at 9pm. Everything else in primetime is NCIS or Law & Order, in a lineup that looks as though it was set in stone years ago.

NCIS fills the 7pm and 8pm slots with Newborn King and Housekeeping, and it had already been on twice earlier in the day. The series has run for 24 series and 507 episodes, with Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherly and Pauley Perrette among the cast. That scale is the point of the channel’s approach: a show that deep in its back catalogue can be scheduled almost anywhere and still find a crowd. It has aired on 10 of the days in our window, so it is as close to wallpaper as a drama gets. As a double bill it is dependable, and I’d rate it a respectable three stars rather than anything more.

Wild Cards, at 9pm, is the interesting entry. It’s a Canadian police procedural from CBC Television, three series and 33 episodes deep, and tonight is S02E12, Clouds in My Eyes. It has only shown up on two days in the window, so it is a rarer guest than its neighbours. Opposite it are Gogglebox on 4seven and This City Is Ours on BBC One, so it is a fair choice if you’ve had enough of both.

The night closes with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit at 10pm and 11pm, Entitled and The Third Guy. The series has 28 series and 594 episodes behind it, with Mariska Hargitay, Ice-T and Danny Pino in the cast. Its own opening season, the one these early episodes come from, is also being run in the small hours, which is a neat way to fill the schedule. At 10pm it competes with BBC News at Ten and Highway Thru Hell on 5action.

Overall this is a night for viewers who already know what they like. Wild Cards gets the pick for being different, nothing more.
