5USA gives you three hours of NCIS, then a rare Organized Crime

The only scheduling decision 5USA made tonight that is worth a second look is nine o’clock. Law & Order: Organized Crime is the one title in the evening that does not turn up almost daily: it appears on just two days in our window, this being one of them. Everything around it is a fixture. If you want the spin-off rather than the habit, that is the slot.

Before it comes a run of NCIS that starts at 6pm and carries on through 7pm and 8pm, with Nature of the Beast, Restless and The Penelope Papers listed back to back. They are episodes 1, 2 and 3 of series 9, so this is a chance to follow a block in order, which is more than most weeknight strands offer. The show is a CBS police procedural that has run for 24 series and 507 episodes, and Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly head the cast. Against it at 7pm is The One Show and at 8pm Celebrity Race Across the World. NCIS also fills the morning from 9.10am, and it airs twice today with ten days in our window. Three hours of it in the evening is a lot of the same thing, and I would pick one hour rather than sit through the lot.

Organized Crime is the better bet. It is an NBC police drama built on Law & Order, now on its fifth series and 75 episodes in total, and tonight’s listing is called The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of. It faces Who Do You Think You Are? on BBC One and Max Payne on 5star, neither of which is chasing quite the same viewer.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit follows at 10pm with Wanderlust and again at 11pm with Sophomore Jinx. It is the NBC series with Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T in the cast, at 594 episodes and 28 series, and it is a daily strand here, so treat it as company for the late evening rather than an event.

The afternoon belongs to Law & Order itself, five episodes from midday, and the small hours are Criminal Minds. For a night in, the plan is simple: dip into NCIS, then stay for nine.
