5USA hands most of Sunday to Columbo

Columbo does not so much anchor this schedule as take it over. Four episodes run across the day: Columbo Cries Wolf at 12.45, Uneasy Lies the Crown at 2.45, Publish or Perish at 4.40 and Forgotten Lady at 6.05. The evening’s one is Strange Bedfellows at 8.05pm, a 115-minute episode from the tenth series, and it is the best thing on the channel tonight. Peter Falk’s detective has been on air long enough to cover 10 series and 69 episodes, and a channel that gives him five slots in a day is not hedging.

Those long episodes make the afternoon something to dip into rather than sit through. Pick the 8.05pm one and the earlier four become a catch-up rather than a commitment. Over on 4seven, Griff Across the Alps is the opposing new series, while ITV3 has Midsomer Murders and BBC One has Blue Planet III. Few of those are as relaxed an evening as an old-school detective story, which is the case for staying put.

The second half of the night belongs to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which is a daily fixture here. At 10pm it is Disrobed, S01E13, followed by Limitations at 11pm. The channel is going back to the first series, long before the show reached its 28 series and 594 episodes, which is a quiet reward for anyone who likes to see how a long-running procedural found its feet. White House Down is on 4seven at the same time if you want something louder.

Blue Bloods gives the morning a lift at 9.55am with S07E01, the opener of the seventh series, and runs three in a row. It is the day’s other repeat-heavy strand, on screen twice today and six times in the window. Criminal Minds fills the overnight hours in the same fashion. The sensible Sunday here is a late lunch with Columbo, a break, then 8.05pm back in the chair.
