4seven spends the evening on houses, then hands over to a quiz

Grand Designs at 8pm is the reason to be here. It is the one programme on 4seven tonight with a long record behind it: 20 series and 160 episodes to its name, and a Channel 4 pedigree that the rest of the lineup can’t match. Tonight’s instalment is the Bedfordshire 2025 build, and it sits in the middle of a four-hour run that is clearly planned around property.

The hour before it is the more interesting scheduling choice. George Clarke’s Building Home starts a new series at 7pm, opening with the Matlock Bath, Derbyshire episode. A series opener in the slot before Grand Designs is a sensible lead-in, though the same title has turned up on six days in the window, so nobody should expect it to be a rare sighting. It is a solid, undemanding start rather than an event. Against it the rivals are mostly early-evening staples, with NCIS on 5USA and The One Show on BBC One, so there is no great sacrifice in choosing it.

Grand Designs is up against more serious opposition at 8pm. Panorama is on BBC One, Casualty 24/7 begins a new run on 5star and Police Interceptors opens a series on 5action. If you want a calm hour about building something, this is the strongest bet in the slot.

Gogglebox follows at 9pm. It is a fixture here, so there’s no news in it, and its 41 episodes to date are a small fraction of what Channel 4 has shown overall. It is fine company if you’ve stayed from 8pm. Across the dial, Made in Chelsea and Michael Palin in the Philippines are the more specific options.

Then comes the one genuinely new thing: Bradley Walsh’s Million Pound Shot, a game show opening its first series at 10pm. It runs 65 minutes and appears again at 1:45am, which tells you 4seven wants it seen. The opposition is heavy for a debut, with BBC News at Ten, Gogglebox on E4 and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit all starting at the same moment. I’d give it a look, but it has to prove itself against a crowded hour.
