4seven keeps its Sunday simple: one new series, one big film

The reason to stay on 4seven this Sunday is White House Down at 10pm, a 2013 Roland Emmerich film with Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx and Maggie Gyllenhaal. At 160 minutes it takes the whole of the late evening, and it is the only thing on the channel built to be watched start to finish. Emmerich makes large, loud action pictures and a 10pm slot suits one. It is a solid three stars: an evening’s company rather than an event.

The surprise is earlier. Griff Across the Alps starts at 8pm as a first episode, S01E01, and a new travel series in the primetime hour is the closest thing 4seven has to news today. It follows A Place in the Sun at 7pm, which fills the channel’s afternoon and early evening in the usual way, so the switch from house-hunting in the Languedoc-Roussillon to a journey through mountains is at least a change of scene. Against it, Columbo is on 5USA and Midsomer Murders on ITV3, so Griff is competing with comfortable favourites. That is a hard ask of a debut, and worth a go if you fancy something unfamiliar.

The obligation is Gogglebox at 9pm. Episode 9 of series 28 airs here and, as it happens, the same episode was on at five past midnight too. It is one of the channel’s fixtures, on every day in the window, and it takes on a crowded 9pm that includes This City Is Ours on BBC One and live NFL on Channel 5. If you have seen it already, nothing is lost by skipping to the film.

Elsewhere, the day is mostly a long run of Four in a Bed from 9am, which sits twice in the window, and The Dog House opens a new series, S08E01, at 3pm. Taskmaster turns up in the small hours, in its fifth appearance across the week. Daytime viewers have plenty to sit through; the evening is where the channel makes its case.
