Rising Damp is the reason to stay up on Great TV

Great TV’s big drama of the night is Blackbeard, but the better viewing comes later. Rising Damp starts at 22:30 and again at 23:00, with Leonard Rossiter, Frances de la Tour and Richard Beckinsale in the cast. It is a British sitcom that ran four series and 28 episodes, and the channel has shown it on nine days of the last fortnight. That familiarity is the point: it is short, tight, and still the best half-hour on the channel. Four stars, and the pick. Over on ITV1, Romesh Ranganathan’s Parents’ Evening and the late news are the alternative.

Blackbeard is the evening’s anchor, with Night 2 on at 20:00 and then again at 20:57. Showing a miniseries instalment twice in under an hour is an odd choice, and the second airing exists mainly so that nobody who tuned in late misses it. Three stars for the programme, with nothing else to say about it yet. It faces NCIS: Los Angeles on 5usa and Water Park Shark on Great Action.

MAS*H opens primetime at 19:00 and returns at 22:00. The show ran for 11 series and 256 episodes on CBS, and it is a daily fixture on this channel. Three stars: it holds up, and no one is surprised to find it here.
