Four MAS*H and a Pfeiffer–Clooney film

Great TV’s Wednesday primetime is simple: two hours of MAS*H, then a film worth staying up for. Both halves are good value.

The sitcom runs from 7pm in half-hour slots, four episodes in a row, taken from the show’s first series. MAS*H was made for CBS and ran for 11 series and 256 episodes, with Alan Alda and Loretta Swit among the cast. Starting at the beginning of a run is a good sign for anyone who has never watched it. At 7:30pm it faces EastEnders and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and at 8:30pm Would I Lie To You? on Dave, so it is a choice, not a default. Two of them, the 7pm and 7:30pm episodes, come round again at 11:20pm and 11:50pm.

At 9pm comes One Fine Day, the 1996 romantic comedy directed by Michael Hoffman, with Michelle Pfeiffer, George Clooney and Mae Whitman. It starts at 9pm, runs 52 minutes, then gives way to a news item at 9:52pm before the remaining 83 minutes at 9:57pm. The break is awkward. The film is the sort that can take it. Four stars, and the night’s pick.
