BBC Four spends Friday night on a single theme, and the 10:40pm film is the reason to arrive

BBC Four’s Friday is one long run of pop music. Five editions of Top of the Pops, a disco compilation and then Studio 54, the 2018 documentary directed by Matt Tyrnauer, all in one evening. If you like the idea, this is among the most coherent schedules on any channel tonight. If you do not, there is nothing else here to catch you.

The film is the one to plan around. Studio 54 starts at 22:40 and runs 100 minutes, so it finishes after midnight, and it is the longest programme in the evening. It is a documentary, and a feature-length one is a different proposition from the clip shows that precede it. It also has a clear field. Opposite it, BBC One has The Graham Norton Show, ITV1 has the news and Family Guy is on ITV2. None of those is aimed at the same viewer, so anyone who wants to settle in with it will not be torn between it and anything of equal weight.

Disco at the BBC at 9:40pm is the lead-in, and it is well placed. An hour of disco from the corporation is the obvious bridge between the chart shows and the film, and the schedule has clearly been put together with that in mind. It has also been on the channel on the 23rd and 24th, so it is not new to the schedule. It is the easy part of the evening, and it has little competition at that time: My Strange Arrest on Blaze and Our Christmas Love Song on Great Romance.

Top of the Pops fills everything before it, from 7pm to 9:40pm, and that is a lot of Top of the Pops. The programme has run to 2,260 episodes, and BBC Four has given over most of its primetime to it. It has turned up on the channel four times across the past fortnight, so it is a fixture and not an event. Dip in at whichever hour suits. The one that will matter to most people is 7:30, against Have I Got News for You on BBC One, and that is the clash where the choice is hardest.

The overnight is another matter. Hauntings is on twice, at midnight and 12:45am, followed by Inside Classical and Battlefield Britain. That is a mixed bag and I would not stay up for it.

My advice is to skip most of the chart shows and keep the evening for Studio 54. If you only have time for one thing on BBC Four tonight, it should be the film.
